Final Year Project:

Introduction//

Picking an idea that is original but can still display an intended message and/or have a clear set of skills is one of the hardest decisions I've had to make during my time at university. With my final project, I created all sound aspects for animations, but with a strong focus on sound design as it is something that I was keen to explore.

Throughout this page, with help from external links, you can see my progress throughout the year, how I made sounds, film theory I used to help accentuate my points and how I managed to overcome issues within the sound design field.

This page will show my overall plan for the project  and initial thoughts. Hover under the Final Year Project tab for more information on each clip individually.

With each video, since there will be around 100+ edited sounds, I will only talk about certain sounds that I feel added emotion, had an impact or gave the image a new meaning.

For this project, I created sound and music for animations of different genres ranging from Sci-Fi to Fantasy.

The clips chosen are:

  • Halo 4 – an in-game cutscene depicting the remains of the mothership, UNSC Forward Unto Dawn and the revival of Master Chief.

  • Divisor - a sci-fi depiction of robots being harvested for parts.

  • Ryze: Call of Power - a fantasy cinematic about a wizard’s journey to reclaim his power.

  • The Albatross - a clip of a struggling writer at sea trying to overcome his alcohol addiction.

*Apologies for certain sounds being quiet on here. Not sure whether it's caused by wix, or the conversion into mp3, or the fact that it's a pre-mix sound.

Preparation:

Initial Ideas, Thoughts and Feelings//

When watching a clip for the first time, I found the best thing to do was to mute all sound and just watch for the image. Not only does this let your ideas flow, but you aren't influenced by the music/sound design the clip already has (if working on something like this)

I found the best way to notate these thoughts was to create a mind map of all my initial ideas and feelings.

I have also created a Gantt Chart which shows my progress throughout the year. (located below)

List of clips:

1.- Ryze: Call to Power

2 - The Albatross

3 - The Divisor

[4] - (Halo - was not an original thought)

Each section is numbered and the number corresponds to which component is being done for which scene. For example, "1.2 Forest" is Record (and create) sounds for the forest in Ryze: Call of Power. There will be some cross over between clips, that is because I can't spend too much time on just one thing as my ears keep adjusting. The time on a different piece would give me a break and allow my ears to return to normal for that specific clip.
